Four Eye Patch Quilting Retreat of May 2002

Friday evening

Three courageous souls arrived Friday. GuamQuilter (Teresa), Pigley (Pigley) and DJzMom (Judy) braved the highways, byways and flightlines to be the first to show up. In a quirky turn of events, the person traveling the most (Teresa) was the first to arrive, around 1pm. Judy wandered in a few hours later, after having a false start (she forgot an item at home; had to return to get it ... had to make a stop to buy supplies). Pigley snuffled in just before dinner.

CThresh (Christine) had planned on spending nights here too, but circumstances suddenly dictated otherwise. :-(

No activities were planned for Friday, so as to allow time for travel decompression. Dinner that night was home-made lasagne, cheese raviolis with alfredo sauce, French bread, tossed green salad. Although my Mom had cautioned me to never subject guests to being culinary guinea pigs, I really wanted to have a fruit tart for dessert. Really .. how difficult could it be? :-) After some Internet research, I found a recipe that looked like something I could handle. The base was puff pastry, topped with a pasry creme custard. The puff pastry was easy enough .. that comes in frozen sheets straight from the grocery store. But as this was the first time I had ever made pastry creme custard, I kinda/sorta messed it up by either over-cooking it or using too high of a heat. Fortunately, Teresa is a much better cook than I am and with her able directions and support, the custard was saved. The fresh fruit (blackberries, strawberries and bananas, glazed with warmed apricot jam) were arranged in an American flag layout, in honor of Memorial Day. I am very pleased to report that it turned out quite tasty.

We waited a respectable amount of time after dinner before having the fruit tart. Here are (from the left) Judy, Pigley and Teresa presenting the dessert. Pigley became infamous for her goofy faces. :-)
