Friendship Stars in blue

size: 37" x 48"

January 2010

There were 12 Friendship Stars that were "blue". All I needed to bring them up to the correct size was a border all the way around. I used plain muslin for the backing.

Once again, I used Carla's Swirls for Borders in the border.
I suppose I really should have branched out and done something different, but honestly, this design is just sooo cool in narrow areas. It fills the space while being interesting.

I used a variegated blue King Tut thread for the quilting only because Lizzy was already threaded with it from the previous quilt! But, I must admit, it blends nicely. Because the border fabric is so busy, there isn't any color thread that really would have stood out. In any case, I don't think having the thread a prominent color would have been a good idea.

The blocks had two different designs: a free-form spiral in the center of the Friendship Star with curved lines radiating into the points. The background design is a continuous Orange Peel.

In a stunningly stupid move, I KEPT the variegated thread for the block quilting. Honestly, what a dumb move.

I was less successful with this Orange Peel than what I did on the Drunkard's Path and Mosaic quilt. On that quilt, I had the structure of the Mosaic blocks themselves to offer guidelines. The background on this quilt is plain white; there are NO visual guides for spacing. Since I didn't use a template for the curve, the resultant curves really are less than splendiferous.

I really, really, really should have changed the thread to white ... all those atrociously misshapen curves wouldn't have stood out so much. Dumb, dumb move. Alternatively, I should have found or made a template.
