The Golden Era Building
732 Montgomery Street

Originally built in 1849-1850, it burned down in 1851 and rebuilt in 1852. Lettering on the base of the iron pillars in front have the date 1897, but in the back of the building, the date reads 1857. The Golden Era was one of the first literary journals of San Francisco and published writings of Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Ina Coolbirth, Joaquin Miller and Thomas Starr King, among others. This building is named for that weekly journal.
